Philosophy of Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies
For more information, please see Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies Aims and Scope page.
Who Can Submit?
Anyone may submit an original article to be considered for publication in Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies provided he or she owns the copyright to the work being submitted or is authorized by the copyright owner or owners to submit the article. We will give equal consideration to submissions by participants in the annual meetings, members of the Association, and the general public. However, the Editors will encourage all participants in the annual meetings, especially junior scholars, to submit revised versions of their papers to be considered for publication.
General Submission Rules
Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). Please note: "publication" in a working-paper series does not constitute prior publication. In addition, by submitting material to Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies.
Submissions in English are preferred; however the BSPHS will accept also articles and book reviews in Spanish and Portuguese.
If you have concerns about the submission terms for Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies, please contact the editors.
Formatting Requirements
Manuscripts normally should not exceed 10,000 words of text (not including notes). Because this journal publishes electronically, page limit policies are not as strict as they are in the world of print publications. Editors may consider the publication of articles that include material authors might otherwise have to cut to get into a print journal. This said, authors should exercise some discretion with respect to length.
See Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for details. Although bepress can provide limited technical support, it is ultimately the responsibility of the author to produce an electronic version of the article as a high-quality PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) file, or a Microsoft Word, WordPerfect or RTF file that can be converted to a PDF file.
It is understood that the current state of technology of Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is such that there are no, and can be no, guarantees that documents in PDF will work perfectly with all possible hardware and software configurations that readers may have.
Book Review Submission Rules
BSPHS includes reviews of current scholarly books that address issues of the history of Spain, Portugal, or their influences in the wider world.
Unless otherwise specified, the review should be no longer than 800 words and the review can be in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Reviews should be submitted in electronic format and follow the specified submission style guidelines.
Please begin the review by including all the facts of publication. The header should be structured in the following manner: Author's Last Name, First Name. Title of Work. Series if applicable. Place of publication: Publisher, Year. Pp. of introduction + pages of text. Illustrations if applicable. Close the review with your name and your institution or city of residence.
In the body of the text, use parentheses if page references are necessary. Please consult the 15th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and a current Webster's dictionary. Please use Times 12 font double-spaced throughout.
Publishers or authors interested in having a monograph reviewed in BSPHS should contact our book review managing editors: Edward Behrend-Martinez behrendmarte@appstate.edu (Medieval and Early Modern) David Messenger dmesseng@uwyo.edu (Modern and cross-disciplinary)
Books submitted are not returned, and become the property of BSPHS.
